Its alot like that. I finally get my PC back in full working order, but i find that when i try to go back to The Ultimate Asparagus that i just dont have the drive i once did. After not being able to touch it for a few months it just doesnt seem to matter anymore. At the same time during my PC less period i had a tonne of new ideas, i got all the storyboarding for my graphic novel complete, aswell as some filled out ideas for some short animations. But then i cant seem to focus, last night i sat down to work on my new website but somehow ended up starting work on a music video to the doors "Break on Through". God knows whats going on in my head at the moment. I suppose ive just lost the desire to work on full toons and prefer the idea of just experimenting and trying new things in the animation medium. Im no longer out to impress other people but rather just to screw around to entertain myself and to see what i can do.

In other news, work was quite last week so i got to do alot of doodling while i should have been working, which is always fun.

Ive been playing alot of Pikmin 2 lately for some reason, i never finished it when i got it and im kinda determined to finish it now. Did this little tribute to Captain Olimar in Open Canvas, first real attempt at the program.

Ive also been watching alot of clips from Neverhood and Skullmonkeys on Youtube, i absolutely love the style and humour found in the series. The music is also fantastic, if i ever made a feature film id want Terry.S.Taylor at the helm.

And this is just because everyones all about Smash Bros at the moment...

These are all just little doodles i did for the hell of it, doodling for the sake of doodling i suppose.

Lastly, ive also been doing a bit of vector art which is relaxing as always.

And yeh, that pretty much sums things up i suppose.

Things Returning To Normal

Well atleast i hope they will be, i get my PC back tomorrow, now equiped with a Quadcore and 4gb of ram. Sadly ill be on XP for a while before i can afford Vista and take advantage of what i have on the machine, but oh well, thems the breaks i guess. In the mean time ive been taking my machine from work home with me. Ive been playing plenty of games and watching plenty of movies, and i think it kinda shows threw what ive been drawing.

Yeh, thatd be the cloverfield monster, tho a little cuter then he appeared in the movie.

And then ofcourse there was the new Duke Nukem Forever trailer that lead to this little ditty.

A gorilla and a shark high fiving? I guess thats more just an internet thing...

I also got to do some vector art last night for the first time in months, it felt good to be going back to something a little more relaxing.

Hopefully ill be able to do some more work with this girl in the future, shes alot of fun to work with. But once again ill need me machine back up and running, on the plus side i managed to salvage "The Ultimate Asparagus - Whats That Sound?" So not all is lost. I cant wait to get it out of the way and start work on some 2008 work.

And im back

My PC died a few weeks back, and i wont have it back for a few weeks yet, i am back at work however, and since its so early in the year and there so little on ive had some time to do some drawing, so i did.

It feels good to be back.

What makes a good flash animator? Part02

And here comes part 2, its been 2 weeks coming. This weeks topic...

Good Characterisation

Interesting thing about these characters is that some of theme come from really bad cartoons. But what is good characterisation anyways? Well, normally a good character is an individual, the dialogue they use wouldn't sound right coming from any other character around them. Its also the driving force for relationships between characters, which is where most good dialogue based humour comes from. I will be limiting this to dialogue driven series, so sorry, no Bitey. This brings back to my first point, some of these characters, some of these characters are from horrible series, im not a fan of a number of these. But just because the writing/animation/voice acting/everything else is horrible in a number of these doesnt mean the personalities themselves behind the characters are there. So heres a list of characters that are just that, real characters.

Blockhead & His Consciounce:

The classic set up, energetic and stupid teamed up with short tempered and reasoning. This duo system has been around since the beginning of entertainment and the system has always worked, Blockhead and his conscience are no different. Blockheads voice is unique and distinct, and while his personality comes accross as random, it never seems like its random without a purpose. His conscience is exact opposite, but in a twist to the old formula hes completely helpless in the situation, having to watch on and give up rather then being able to slap the moron in the face as his genre of character normally would.

Salad Fingers:

Theres only one Salad Fingers,a creepy yet somehow pathetic being from the wastelands, between his love for rust and caressing things and his mental instability, Salad Fingers has established himself as one of the most unqie and creative characters out there.

Burnt Face Man & The Narrator:

Burnt Face Man, while at first seeming like the generic superhero parody, is really another clever send up of the buddy system buddy system, Burnt Face Man being a moron (tho obviously not as stupid as characters like Blockhead)and the witty and cruel Narrator, who seems to always win, and diss Burnt Face Man at any given oppertunity. Its the innocent idiot and asshole knowall that makes the series work. Its not only a clever play on the usual Superhero set up, but also of the buddy set up.

Strong Bad & Co:

Everybody already knows well and truly about the Homestarrunner Crew, Theyve been around forever. There also probably the best example of a large yet diverse cast of clever and individual characters. Its a wonder how the series has been around for so long yet nobodys came close to pulling off such a diverse cast again.

Ingus:

Ingus, whats there to say, hes random words that fly out of a red necks body. While that itself doesnt lend all that well to his personality, his voice and mannerisms help make him more then just another random line of dialogue.

Toast King & Insanity Prawn Boy:

Suprise suprise, the smart and the not so smart are teamed up again, and once again, they play off each other beautifully. Praw Boys voice absolutely perfectly suited to his mannerisms and dialogue, as is Toast Kings. Its hard to argue against the amount of personality these 2 have and the chemisty between them.

Weebl & Bob:

Weebl and Bob are getting on in years, but they proove very well that theres more to character then appearences. Despite being almost identical they both incredibly individual. Weebl is the idiot incharge and Bob the gullible guy that follows him. Its another well prooven system that Weebl and Bob pull of brilliantly.

Greasy Moose Crew:

Unlike most of the other characters listed, The Greasy Moose characters are just to deep to really have a short summary of, suffice to say, there all genious.

Jerry Jackson:

Jerry Jackson was without a doubt a stroke of genious, a fictional kid who makes flash about the events in his life. His voice is unique yet somehow doesnt sound like it couldnt exist out there in the newgrounds forums. His personality is a realistic parody of the kinds of kids you find on the net. Hes the ultimate fake personality, and since he has a fictional life outside of his cartoons he earns an even greater amount of respect from me.

So then whats bad characterisation? Well, thatd be when the dialogue is written in a way that its so gag based that it doesnt matter who says it. This is a popular system in most animated sitcoms, scripts arent written with the characters in mind but rather the jokes and pop culture references are decided on and divided amoung the characters afterwards. Its a poor system and leads to toons with little to no characterisation. Some examples would be...

College University:

High School Saze:

Waterman:

Notice also how these series consist of 99% standing around talking? As we all know anime is uber popular these days, and theres alot of flash animators who have decided to try to immitate it. Usually these end up being horrible cliches, Xin being a prime example. Then you have those people who use that horrible imbrew east/west mix, that always has everyone looking like ass, but thats what seems to be popular today. ofcourse youve also got you people who blatently copy Jhonen Vasquez (Hot Diggity Demon as talented as he is, is a prime example of style theft.) and Jamie Hewett who apparently wasnt cool enough to immitate until after the success of Gorillaz. These are 2 artists who obviously insainly popular and are holding some ground for all cartoonists in the west, but there is also a large number of artists both past and present, who were incredibly talented, yet nobody seems to want to imitate or borrow ideas from, why beats the hell out of me. But next time you decide you want to make a flash toon that looks a little more individual keep these artists in mind.

Maurice Sendak

Everybody who reads this blog should know who she is, tho probably none will know her by name. Shes most famous for her 1963 childrens book "Where the wild things are". Its beautifully illustrated with fantastic monster designs, its been over 40 years since this book came out, why hasnt anyone followed her design ideas or borrowed some of her artistic direction?

Brian Froud

Another name every self respecting illustrator should know but for some reason most people i talk to dont know who he is until i mentioned what he worked on. You folks may recognise him as the designer of all the creatures in the 2 Jim Henson movies The Dark Crystal and Labrynth. Froud had an absolutely amazing sense of design, with the ability to create bizarre creatures that where somehow both cartoony, yet followed the laws of anatomy and life enough to be completely real. he had an insain amount of talent, yet he is another one of those artists that nobody seems to want to mimick the style of.

Murray Ball

Heres a name that most people outside Australia and New Zealand wouldnt recognize, tho apparently Lucky didnt know who he was, shame on him. Ball was the comic artist behind a series called Footrot Flats, set in the New Zealand countryside. His sense of design was absolutely brilliant. He could be best described as a charicaturist i suppose, but his characters were all his own, charicaturs of the stereotypes you find in the country.

I swear theres more personality in this guys face then there is in all of Pixars movies put together. The Ultimate Asparagus series. I have so many characters i want to use and i dont think ill improve if i just stick to the same ones. So ill be sticking to the same stories as i have already written but rather making it an episodic series i think ill make them all self contained little stories set in the same universe. Ofcourse some characters will appear in more then one episode and Gerkinman will be in quite a few, the equivolent to Brackenwoods Bitey i guess you would say. Maybe with a little less emphasis on him. Anyways, yeh thats it for now, more as it comes, and i should have What makes a good flash animator? Part01

This is a series of journals ive been wanting to start for quite a while now, the first several will focus on what it means to be a great flash animator (in my opinion) aswell as what it takes to be a lousy flash authur, and later will also discuss what makes a great flash character and how to create atmosphere. If you want to have a paricular animator discussed just leave a comment and i'll see what i can do in the future.

***The following journal is just an opinion***

What is it that makes a flash animator good? Is it the artists technical skill? There ability to create smooth and seamless animation with jaw dropping backgrounds and a great understanding of perspective and anatomy? Well yes, partly, but i believe it goes deeper then that. I personally think that as important as being good technically is, the most important thing is being able to evolve and experiment. By evolving and always trying new things can keep an audience captivated alot easier then by recycling the same work. A few good examples of artists like this are...

The Swain

Hes been around since 2005, Blockhead was a breath of fresh air at the time, and even now i find it to easily be one of the best series on newgrounds. When it first started tho, Blockhead, from a technical standpoint wasnt all that impressive. The Swain was and still is to my knowledge completely self taught, the quality his animation has improved over the last 2 years is completely astonishing, and id argue he has improved more over such a short time period then any other animator around. Just look at the golf between his work from 2005 to his current work at the end of 2007. This is largely due to him taking constructive critism and working on his faults.

2005

2007

But the other thing he does is experiment, he doesnt limit himself to one particular series or style of humour, which is important if you want to keep on improving. If you focus on one area then all other areas will fall apart.

The Swain tries new things and takes what people say onboard, This is what makes The Swain a great flash animator.

David Firth

Alot of people hate David Firths work, whether it because its wierd, or because it isnt trying to be funny. I personally appreciate what he does. He set out to make what he wanted and thats exactly what he does. And while he may not be the most impressive animator on a technical level, his simple animation style suits the storys he tells. But thats not to say he hasnt improved and evolved over the years. While alot of animators strive to make there animation as smooth as possible, David Firth tries to create as much atmosphere as possible, something that alot of flash authors neglect in there work. This shows threw all his work, from Salad Fingers to A Black and White Cartoon about Berries. Hes not afraid to experiment, as Burnt Face Man shows, and he just like the swain tends to take constructive crit on board, and is always improving, tho his improvements tend to be alot more subtle then alot of other flash animators. This makes David Firth, a great flash animator.

---

So theres part01. I havent had the chance to do any animation over the last week due to visitors, but i have been doing some networking, and in the process i have now struck a deal with the cult chiptune musician "Dong" from Japan to use his music in my work, INCLUDING the eventual DVD release of the series. So im rather excited about that. You can find his music here.

http://www.yarhalla.jpn.org/yarhalla/16d/index_e.html

I will be trying to get music from some other cult favorite musicians, such as Trash80 who did the soundtrack for the game Darwinia aswell. Its important to keep track of where there would be gaps in real life, such as between the fridge and the wall, this is so you can put them on separate layers in case you decide to ever have anything come out from behind the front objects.

Step 03:

The next step is colouring, this is as simple as using the colour picker on the photo and painting in beetween the lines, i do this on a layer below the original line art, this allows to be messy and get a more hand drawn look, but you can keep it clean and use the fill tool within the original line art too if you want the background to look a little less messy.

Step 04:

Once the fills have been layered out, the next step is textures, the way to get the cleanest textures is to copy the original fills and past them on a layer above, then replacing the fills with your texture of choice. Once all the textures are in convert that entire layer into a movie clip and fiddle with the alphas and filters until your happy with the look.

Step 05:

Adding atmosphere and lighting. In this case the air is stagnant with dust floating in the air, these are all just little lines drawn with the paint tool, several hundred are done so as to avoid a look of repetition, also a second lot is added behind it where they are much smaller to add a sense of depth. The lighting is also a combination of several gradients and filters.

And that's the generally how the backgrounds are made, some are a little more in depth with solid shadows for things like the underside of trees and plants and things like the sky to take into consideration, but i will cover these in a later post.

Gerkinman Started a Blog

Yes he did, and he plans to keep it focused. No e-drama and the like here. This blog will be focused on 3 things.

1: Nimbin Industries Cartoons and Films.
Yes, progress reports on how my cartoons are going. Step by step guides as to how my cartoons are made. Short outlines on future projects. Updates on my comic ventures. All that jazz. Will be updated frequently. As well as any random short videos i make whether it be a lightning storm or some crazy piece of experimental film.

2: Australian Multimedia Festivals
Ill be keeping you guys up to date on upcoming conventions (Such as Supanova and Armageddon) that i will be attending, what stock ill have with me and who else is going that's worth looking into. As well as any upcoming Film Festivals that will be screening my work.

3: How to bring more life into your flash and illustration.
These posts will be highly opinionated, and based on my theories as to what makes a good flash. Ill be using examples from Newgrounds and art communities like DeviantART and SheezyArt. This wont be focused on things like colour or art style, but rather personality which allot of modern cartoons lack. Ill try to get one of these done a week. Also if you want a cartoon of your own broken down and have its strengths and weaknesses explained so that these elements can be worked on and improved in the future you can leave a comment with a link to your work.

Of course, I'm not saying my way is the write or wrong way, its just one persons opinion, but that's what makes opinions fun. What impresses 12 year old Nintendo fan boys might not impress someone running a local film festival or someone looking for concept art for a game.

And yeah, that pretty much sums it up.
